The Malinauskas Labor Government is growing trades capacity to build more homes with a new plumbing training facility.

Two new training sandpits will be built at the TAPS Beverley training site, helping to address current apprentice capacity constraints and support an additional 240 plumbing apprentices.

The $700,000 project has been co-funded by the Malinauskas Labor Government through a Skills Shortage Solutions grant, an election commitment from the 2022 State Election.

Demand for the TAFE Certificate III in Plumbing continues to grow, with commencements increasing by 20 per cent over the past 12 months. There were 435 commencements in the year to June 2025, up from 360 the previous year, the highest level in four years.

Metropolitan TAFE campuses are now operating at full capacity for traditional trades such as plumbing, following significant growth over the past four years.

Labor’s investment will help build the skilled workforce needed for AUKUS, housing and construction, clean energy, and major State Government projects such as new schools and hospitals. It will also expand training opportunities and create pathways closer to home, particularly for communities that have traditionally faced barriers to employment.

A re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government plans to supercharge Labor's already significant investments in skills with a number of new initiatives set to deliver the skilled workforce needed to build more homes.

Labor's Plan to Supercharge Investment in Skills:
  • Over 1,000 pathways to enter the construction industry through university scholarships, apprenticeships and industry partnerships
  • An additional three Technical Colleges in Gawler, Marden and Murray Bridge
  • A new TAFE Trades Workshop in Mount Barker, offering construction trades to an estimated additional 1,200 apprentices
  • More than 1,000 new university, trade and upskilling opportunities for South Australians to work on the AUKUS project
