Battery electric hybrid trains, which charge while operating under overhead wires and then run on battery power in non-electrified parts of the network, are a proven technology used in a number of countries including Japan, Ireland, Croatia and the United States.
Currently, there are no battery powered passenger trains operating in Australia.
The battery passenger train trial will operate on the Belair rail line, providing a cleaner, greener and quieter service.
The Belair line currently operates with modified diesel hybrid 3000 Class trains.
A re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will work with industry to develop the specific requirements for the Belair line, which is not suitable for traditional overhead electrification infrastructure due to its narrow corridor and tight curves.
Labor has a proven history of successfully trialling new environmentally friendly transport technologies before implementing broader changes.
Other states have already indicated they will closely monitor the battery train trial which, if successful, could significantly reduce the infrastructure investment required to operate electric passenger rail services.
