More than 2,700 Australians are living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a devastating group of diseases that progressively affect a person’s motor nerves. There is currently no cure. MND is complex and varies significantly from person to person, with symptoms worsening over time and often leading to profound, life-changing disability.
While MND cannot be reversed, timely and appropriate support can make a meaningful difference. Support helps manage symptoms, prolong independence, reduce hospitalisation, and enable people living with MND to achieve the best possible quality of life at every stage of the illness.
That is why a re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will increase funding to Motor Neurone Disease South Australia, providing $4 million over four years to expand rapid-access equipment loan programs for South Australians living with MND. This includes essential breathing, mobility and communication devices, as well as everyday living aids. The funding will also support multidisciplinary health teams to assist people over 65 living with MND who are unable to access immediate support through Commonwealth programs.
In addition, a re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will invest $1.8 million as part of a nearly $3 million partnership with Neale Daniher’s FightMND and Flinders University to establish Australia’s only dedicated MND Biomarker Research Centre of Excellence, strengthening research capability and accelerating progress towards better diagnosis and treatments.
We know there is no cure for MND, and it cannot be reversed, but support can help. It can ease and manage symptoms, prolong independence, and help achieve the best possible quality of life at each stage of the illness.
