A re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will invest $75 million in programs designed to get children active and engaged, helping keep kids off screens.

Smartphones and social media are among the modern parenting challenges of our time.

Expert evidence shows that social media and excessive screen time can harm the development and mental health of our children.

The Malinauskas Labor Government has banned mobile phones in schools and led the world by initiating Australia’s ban on social media for children.

Delaying smartphone ownership supports a child’s cognitive development and learning, allowing them to build academic confidence and executive functioning skills, while strengthening focus and attention span without the constant pull of a device.

That is why a re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will invest $75 million in programs to help ensure South Australian children and young people can live active, healthy and happy lives, where smartphones and social media are not the defining feature of their childhood.

Labor's Plan to Keep Kids Off Screens:
  • Free school camps for Year 7 students
  • Keeping our kids active during school time with 150 minutes of mandatory active learning per week.
  • Free activities before and after school
  • Expanding Sports Vouchers to 16 to 18-year-olds
  • Free school holiday come and try sessions
  • Making school facilities more accessible to the community
  • Funding improvements to school facilities for community use
  • Ensuring all new public schools are designed for community use
  • More students volunteering
  • Guaranteeing green space in all new housing developments
