Rent to own Rent to own

A re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will build an extra 1,250 new rent-to-own homes across greater Adelaide.

While South Australia is experiencing its strongest economic growth in a generation, we know inflationary pressures and housing shortages are driving higher rents and house prices across the country.

For many South Australians, particularly long-term renters and young families, owning a home can feel out of reach. The South Australian Labor Party is committed to ensuring our housing market is accessible to everyone.

Labor believes stable housing is the foundation for a strong future. We want to give long-term renters a fair go, offering the security of a home now and a real opportunity to own it in the future.

That is why a re-elected Malinauskas Labor Government will build an additional 1,250 rent-to-own homes across greater Adelaide. This commitment is in addition to the 750 homes the South Australian Government will deliver as part of an $801.5 million agreement with the Commonwealth to build 6,877 homes for first home buyers.

Rent to Own is a new and innovative scheme that will give South Australians a real opportunity to break out of the rental cycle and own their own home. It will also act to free up more rental properties for those looking to get into the rental market.

Labor's comprehensive housing policies will increase housing supply across the state, providing real support and opportunity for South Australians who want to realise their dream of purchasing their own home.

Labor's Plan includes:
  • Building a total of 2000 new Rent to Own Homes
  • Leasing homes for up to three years at 75% market, allowing tenants to save a deposit and prepare to buy
  • Locking in a purchase price at the start of the lease, to protect from future property market increases
  • Reinvesting sales proceeds back into the program, ensuring the initiative continues into the future
