Matt Burnell

Matt Burnell is a proud local, father, and former seafarer who represents the northern suburbs with a strong belief in fairness, secure jobs, and opportunity for all.

Growing up in a small farming town, Matt learned the value of hard work early—whether it was helping on the family farm, watching his mum work night shifts as a nurse, or taking on his first job at 15. His time in the Army Reserves deepened his sense of duty and commitment to serving his community.

Before entering Parliament, Matt built a career in transport and maritime industries and became a passionate advocate for workers, standing up to corporate interests and governments that put profits ahead of people. As a proud union member, he’s spent his career fighting for better wages, job security, and respect for working families.

Matt is determined to rebuild local manufacturing, create secure jobs, and address the rising cost of living that’s hitting households across the north. He’s focused on delivering stronger public health and education systems, affordable housing, and a better future for the next generation.

Deeply connected to his community, Matt brings lived experience, hard work, and integrity to everything he does in Parliament. He’s committed to ensuring the voices of the north are heard—and acted on.
