Karen Grogan

Karen Grogan entered Federal Parliament as a Senator for South Australia in 2021, bringing a lifelong commitment to social justice, workers’ rights, and environmental action.

Karen has worked across education, mental health, Aboriginal affairs, and the community services sector. Her time at the Central Land Council and within the university sector gave her a deep understanding of the importance of Closing the Gap and the need for real partnership with First Nations communities.

Before entering Parliament, Karen was a senior leader at the United Workers Union, standing with some of the country’s lowest-paid and most vulnerable workers. She is a proud union member and remains a passionate advocate for fair pay and secure jobs.

Karen has also served as CEO of the South Australian Council of Social Services and as Director of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists. She has a long track record of working with experts to develop evidence-based policy that tackles poverty, improves lives, and addresses climate change.

With senior experience in government – including in the offices of Federal Minister Mark Butler and former Premier Jay Weatherill – Karen knows how progressive policy can deliver lasting change.

Now in the Senate, she continues to fight for equity in education and health, strong action on climate, and a better, fairer future for all. Karen proudly supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart and is committed to Voice, Treaty and Truth.
