Reggie Martin was born and raised in Port Adelaide, attending Taperoo High School before studying Philosophy at the University of Adelaide.
During his early years at university, Reggie worked as a kitchenhand in a pizza bar. This job sparked a lifelong interest in equity and workers’ rights and led him to take on a role with the Shop Assistants’ Union, the SDA.
What began as an initial three-month position with the SDA became a ten-year career, during which Reggie worked as a night fill organiser, area organiser and finally as Training Officer.
Assisting members who needed the support of their union inspired Reggie to pursue a career dedicated to advancing the interests of working people across South Australia.
While working with the SDA, he often volunteered his time with the Labor Party, contributing to campaigns at both a state and federal level.
In 2011, Reggie was supported to become the Assistant Secretary of the South Australian Labor Party and was elected as State Secretary the following year.
The highlights of his time as State Secretary include serving as Campaign Director for the 2014 State Election victory, which was famously dubbed “the unwinnable election”, and leading the successful 2022 election campaign.
As a Member of Parliament, Reggie has only strengthened his commitment to equity and opportunity for all South Australians.
He believes that ensuring every young person has the chance to explore their potential and achieve their best is vital to the success of society. Contributing in Parliament to initiatives and reforms that advance this ideal is a privilege he does not take for granted.
He is married to the love of his life and soulmate, and together they share two fantastic children. His family motivates him every day to work towards creating a better future for the people of South Australia. Reggie is passionate about sport, particularly cricket where he dreams of returning to the park if only his shoulder would allow it, as well as reading, travel and cinema.
