Biography
Lindsay was elected as the State Member for Morialta in March 2006. Among her duties she is Chair of the Parliamentary Health Caucus and the Parliamentary Representative on the Board of Reconciliation SA. Ms Simmons is also on the Public Works, Social Development, Standing Orders and Statutory Officers Committees of Parliament. In 2007 Lindsay was made an Ambassador of the South Australian Business Ambassadors Network (SABAN).
Lindsay has always had a strong commitment to social justice issues. Having lived all over the world she has a particular interest in multicultural affairs and in 2004 was appointed as a Commissioner to the South Australian Equal Opportunity Tribunal. After studying at both Cambridge and London Universities in the UK, Lindsay worked as a teacher for the Inner London Education Authority, before moving back to Cambridge to take up the position of Headmistress at St Mary’s Convent School. Lindsay and her family came out to Australia in 1986. Having worked as a senior adviser in both the Hawke and Keating Federal Governments, Lindsay decided to utilize her Psychology and Counselling qualifications by moving into the disability sector. Before being elected to Parliament, Lindsay has held the positions of CEO to the Blind Welfare Association, Cystic Fibrosis SA & the Autism Association of SA. Lindsay was also Chief of Staff to the Minister for Education in SA before taking up her role as State Policy Manager at Council on the Ageing. As well as being involved in various State Boards and Committees, relating to Health Reform, SA Energy Council, Housing and Welfare issues, Lindsay has represented SA on various National Committees, most significantly the National Women’s Consultative Committee, The National Committee for International Year of the Family and the National ACROD Committee on Ageing and Disability.
Electorate Profile - Morialta
Morialta is derived from a Kaurna aboriginal word 'mariyatala' - 'mari' meaning 'east' and 'yertala' flowing water'. Area:approx. 82.6km2 Location: Takes in the foothills suburbs and hills area to the to the east and north-east of Adelaide, the River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri forming the northern boundary. History: Created at the 1998 boundary redistribution (formerly Coles) contested for the first time at the 2002 election.
