Biography
From 1989, Michael has represented the Hindmarsh, Croydon, Woodville and Findon area in State Parliament. He lives locally, in Wilpena Terrace, Kilkenny, with his wife Joan, four children, Hugh, 19, Bridget, 17, John, 14, and Christopher,10, and Maltese terrier Gus. Michael stays in touch with local people by visiting them at home on his bicycle, participating in talkback radio and travelling on public transport. As Attorney-General, Michael is in charge of the Rann Government's overhaul of the criminal-justice system.
Electorate Profile - Croydon
Croydon the village was laid out in 1855, comprising Croydon Farm of 40 acres and five-acre lots. The name Croydon is from the French 'craye' (chalk) and the Saxon 'dun' (hill) - a town near a chalk hill. Area:approx. 16.9km2 Location: Situated to the north-west of the City of Adelaide and bounded in the south by the River Torrens/Karrawirra Pirri. Largely residential with some light industry. History: The electorate was re-named in the 1998 redistribution, having being called Spence for 29 years and Hindmarsh for decades before that. The 2003 redistribution made no changes to the boundaries; the electorate keeping up with the State-wide population growth by urban infill in Brompton, Ridleyton and Allenby Gardens.
